Encouragements

Some things to remember...

Here are a few lessons we learned along the waY...

  1. Consider the shape of the poem on the page, after all, the reader sees the poem before they read the poem.
  2. A good story doesn't have to be long (that's why they're called short stories)
  3. Read the classics, read work from other cultures, read anything and everything.
  4. Surprise yourself (write in another genre).
  5. If you're right-handed, write with your left hand and notice the difference.
  6. Do your best, then revise until its better. If you don't quite know how, read your work out loud (in your bathroom or backyard) - you'll hear what works, and more important, you'll hear what needs more attention.
  7. If you haven't been to the Library lately, go.
  8. Be humble about your work and kind about the work of others.
  9. It's okay to call yourself a writer.
